Welcome! It is with great pleasure that I welcome you and your child to St. Agatha Catholic School and to my classroom. I am very excited about meeting each and every one of you. I'm looking forward to teaching your child and providing meaningful experiences to develop a lifelong love of learning. I truly want their Kindergarten year to be a positive experience. I am also very excited to introduce you to my wonderful assistant, Mrs. Sandy. Together we will make every effort to ensure that your child achieves his or her maximum potential.
Please find below some important school policies. Please ensure that you read each one and adhere to them.
School Hours: Kindergarten school hours are from 8:00am to 2:30pm. The school opens at 7:40am. Your child will be considered tardy if he/she arrives after 8:00am sharp. It is extremely important for your child to arrive to school on-time as late arrivals create a disruption to our classroom. It is required that students bring a note following an absence or a tardy slip if they are late.
Dismissal: Starting on the third day of school, students will be dismissed from the designated covered sidewalk area outside of the school that is adjacent to the church. The teacher’s name will be posted. For security reasons, you cannot pull your child out of line. Please be patient and wait for your child’s teacher to dismiss the students one at a time. It is going to take us a few days to get to know all the parents/grandparents and be able to match-up the parents to the student.
Uniforms: Students need to be in complete uniform at all times, including St. Agatha socks. Girls are required to wear shorts under their dresses. Boys must wear a belt if their pants/shorts have belt loops. P.E. will be on Mondays. White sneakers are required for P.E. Sweaters, jackets, and raincoats MUST be labeled with your child’s complete name. We are not responsible for any lost items.
Password: You are required to choose a password for picking-up your child. It is imperative that you inform me of the password that you have chosen. The person picking-up your child needs to know this password for safety and security reasons.
Change of Clothes: Please ensure that you send your child with an extra set of clothes that can be used in case of a bathroom accident. Please ensure that the clothes are sent no later than Tuesday, August 23 in a Ziploc bag with your child’s name on every item of clothing.
Materials: Please bring in all the supplies and books no later than Tuesday, August 23 labeled with your child’s complete name on them. No book bags, blankets, or pillows are allowed.
Lunch/Snack: Please be sure to always turn in the completed monthly order form on-time. Lunch boxed must be labeled with your child’s complete name. Snack will be provided daily.
Mass Attendance: St. Agatha School requires that all students attend mass on a weekly basis. If you attend mass at St. Agatha Church, you will need to turn in your collection envelope during the collection at Mass, even if it is empty as it will be used to track mass attendance cards. If you forget your envelope please fill out a temporary one which is available in each pew. If you attend mass at another church, you will need to turn in to me on Mondays the church bulletin signed by the Priest conducting mass.
Curriculum: We follow the Archdiocese of Miami Guidelines. All of your child’s books are in correspondence with those guidelines.Portfolio Assessments: Every trimester you will be informed of your child’s progress. The Kindergarten grading system is as follows:
C = means I can
W= means I am working on it
N= means I need more time
Sight Words: It is important that you practice these daily with your child. When you see them on your child’s homework, write them on flash cards and drill your child daily. It is imperative that they can recognize them in order for them to succeed in reading. They will be tested on sight words weekly.
Reading Logs: Reading Logs will go home on a weekly basis and are required to be turned in at the end of the week. Reading to or with your child is extremely important in developing both their reading skills and their love of reading.
Birthdays: Please let us know ahead of time if you plan on bringing in something for your child’s birthday. Please let us know what snack you will be bringing in to share with the class. We prefer food that is individually sorted like cupcakes, cookies, or doughnuts. You can also bring in a drink for all the kids. Please bring them with you when you drop-off your child in the morning. Parents are not allowed in the classroom for birthday celebrations.
Quiet Time: Your child will be having quiet time every day. During this time, he or she will be given a mat to rest on. Pillows and blankets are not required.
Communication: If I ever need to communicate with you, I will send a note home in your child’s folder. Please check their folder's daily, as it is both a homework/communication folder. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at the school’s telephone no. (305) 222-8751. You can also send me a note in your child’s folder or send me an e-mail at kinderb@stagathaonline.org. Please make sure to reference the child's name in the subject line when sending an e-mail.
Homework: Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis. Students are expected to complete their homework every night and return it to school on Fridays in their homework folders. Please ensure that you child takes pride in completing their work using their best handwriting. Also ensure that all homework is done in pencil.HOMEWORK FOLDERS MUST BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL EVERY SINGLE DAY. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR CHILD’S FOLDER DAILY FOR THEIR ASSIGNMENTS AND FOR NOTES FROM ME.
Even if no Homework is assigned, they still need to bring them to school everyday because we use them as a communication folder.
