Research Paper Guidelines for English
˙ Times New Roman, 12 pt font
˙ Double spaced
˙ Indent paragraphs
˙ Proper school heading in upper left-hand corner
˙ Correct MLA style, in-text citations (depends on type of source used!)

Remember the following:
˙ Must include introductory paragraph with thesis statement.
˙ Report must be between 7 to 8 paragraphs long
˙ Need to include a minimum of 10 parenthetical, in-text citations
˙ Must have concluding paragraph
˙ Must include final outline
˙ Must be written in third person
˙ Must include typed works cited page (or bibliography) in proper MLA format
˙ DO NOT include opinions unless it is a quote from a credible source and it is cited.
˙ DO NOT use personal pronouns such as: I, me, you, we, us, etc. In other words, NO FIRST or SECOND person pronouns.
˙ This report is NOT about your invention, but about an inventor (or an invention) that inspires you.
Staple report in the following order:
˙ Final draft on top
˙ Outline
˙ Works Cited
˙ Rough draft of research paper only
Points will be deducted for errors in grammar, sentence cohesion, and for any violation of the above guidelines.
Automatic 10 point deduction will be made for missing components such as: parenthetical citations, bibliography, outline, introductory, concluding paragraph, and rough draft of research report.

want to consider getting a copy of the English handbook Strunk and E.B.
White's The Elements of Style. Excellent way to check up on grammar
and usage rules. Thin enough to take anywhere, so it's travel friendly.
Suitable for both students and parents. Available at Barnes and Noble,
Borders, and most other book stores.

Important: All final drafts for writing assignments must be typed. Specific guidelines: Times New Roman 12 pt font (black), double spaced, 1" margins on all sides, proper school heading on upper left corner.
Having computer issues? Visit your local public library. Most of them have computer services available.
Log on to www.mdpls.org , Miami Dade Public Library System, to find a branch near you.
Extra Credit
Opportunities for extra credit points may be given per trimester. It is up to the student whether or not he or she wishes to participate in the extra credit activities. Each student may receive up to 10 extra credit points per quarter. Only 10 points may be applied to the desired lowest test grade. THIS SHOULD NOT BE A REPLACEMENT FOR STUDYING HARD AND DOING YOUR ASSIGNMENTS!!! EXTRA CREDIT IS UP TO MY DISCRETION.
Although I do provide information about daily homework assignments on this web site, it is your child's responsibility to write down his or her assignments each day in class. Assignments are subject to change.
