Dear parents and students,
A few minor amendments have been introduced to our Music Class Discipline Plan for the School year 2011-2012 in recent days. They do not substantially modify the original document, but for all pertinent purposes, this reviewed version overrides the previous one.
The amendments in question are:
Under chapter III (Rewards and Incentives), item 5, the word "present" has been replaced by "reward". So now item 5 reads "Small rewards, pins, and/or certificates"
Under chapter V - (Consequences) two items, "completion of additional written assignments" and "referral to another teacher's classroom" have been permanently overruled as disciplinary consequences in music class.
All students will be notified of these changes and instructed to perform the amendments by hand in class. To review and/or obtain a new copy of this updated version of the plan in PDF format, please go to

SAS MUSIC CURRICULUM GUIDELINES
In Saint Agatha School our main curricular music resources are our Archdiocese of Miami Music Curriculum and the American National Standards for music education. While we abide by our own archdiocesan curriculum, valuable elements of the national standards are also incorporated by grade level to complement our school's music program. Keep in mind that these are general guidelines and may differ in some measure from the actual music lessons conducted in our school, both in objective and activities. Obviously, we give great priority in our music class to mass song singing activities. All-round considered, it is safe to state that our children in SAS, since PK4 to 8th Grade, are exposed to a diversity of music objectives and activities, from music theory, classical and popular music history, music appreciation, to vocal and instrumental responses -including coral singing, bells, hand percussion instruments, drum kit, guitar and bass guitar- in order to complete their elementary and middle school education with a "sound" musical background. Go ahead and check out our Archdiocese of Miami Music Curriculum's Mission Statement, Curriculum Matrix and contents by grade level, as well as the National Standards for Music Education.

General guidelines for Edline/Gradequick record review in Music Class, Grade Levels 3-8.
Dear Parents,
When reviewing your child's music progress report on Edline/Gradequick website, please be aware of the following general guidelines:
♦ Your child's grade in music class will be determined by:
1/3 class participation (PART)
1/3 class work or homework (CW/HW)
1/3 test and quizzes (TEST/QZ)
♦ All grading activities will be based on 100% maximum possible points.
♦ Under Name on the report you will find keywords describing the type of assignment given to your child, for instance:
Discuss (i.e., discussing the discipline plan), Sing (i.e., singing mass songs), Bells (i.e., playing a piece of music on the glockenspiels)
♦ Under Date on your child's report you will find the date of the assignment (i.e., 08/22/11)
♦ Under Category you will find one of the following keywords describing the kind of evaluation applied:
PART = Class Participation, CW/HW = Class work/Homework, or TEST/QZ = Test or Quiz
♦ Under Score on the report you may find either a numeric figure, or an equivalent symbol, letter or word representing the score obtained by your child. For instance: numbers 100, 95, 93, 90, 85, 80, 77, 70, 60, 50 (Grade scale 1) / 4, 3, 2, 1 (Grade Scale 2), symbols + +, +, √+, /+, √, /, √-, /-, -, letters O, VG (= A), S , G (=B), P (=Pass), C, I (=D), N, U, F (=Fail), NC, X.
Symbol, letter or word equivalences for grading purposes have been customarily adjusted this school year in music class to:
+ + = 100%
+ = 99%
O = 98%
√+ = 95%
A, VG or /+ = 93% = 4 (1st & 2nd grade)
S or √ = 90%
B, G, Pass or / = 85% = 3 (1st & 2nd grade)
√- = 80%
C or /- = 77% = 2 (1st & 2nd grade)
I or - = 76%
D or N = 70% (Minimum Passing Score)
U = 60% = 1 (1st & 2nd grade)
Fail = 50%
F or NC = 0% (No Credit)
X or ** = Exempt (won't modify student's average)
♦ Under Max you will always find a 100 figure representing the maximum possible points to be earned in any evaluation.
♦ Under % on the report you will find the exact numeric equivalence of the grade earned by your child in the evaluation regardless the input method on the Score column (number, symbol or letter).
Note: In order to achieve a high class participation evaluation (PART), students must come to music class ready to work with all the necessary materials, and actively participate in the assigned task. Composer/Artist researches and projects assigned in music class to be completed at home will fall under the category of Class work/Homework (CW/HW). Testing activities (TEST/QZ) in music may include not only a variety of knowledge based written assignments (i.e., music history/music appreciation/music theory quizzes, note ID/music dictation, composing rhythm or melodic patterns, etc.), but also performing activities assessing vocal responses -VR- or instrumental responses -IR- (i.e., mass song singing, chanting rhythms, intonation -"solfeggio"- exercises, playing bells, percussion hand instruments, etc.)

TEN YEARS AGO...

On November 29, 2001, passed away at age 58 in Los Angeles, CA, Sir George Harrison (OBE), former lead guitar of the most beloved British rock band of all time, THE BEATLES. George will be remembered not only for his great contributions to the rock music history as a guitarist, singer and composer, but also for his social activism and participation in many charitable causes, among them, the famous Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden in New York City, 1971. The concert raised US $243,418.51 for Bangladesh relief, which was administered by UNICEF. Sales of the album and DVD continue to benefit The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF...
ALSO, FIFTY YEARS AGO...

THE BEATLES...
The band founded by John Lennon in 1957 in Liverpool, England, was already on its way to become one of the most successful rock bands of all time. Originally known as The Quarrymen, the group destined to change forever the course of pop and rock music was later renamed as The Beatles, having as front men John Lennon (band leader, guitar and vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar and vocals) and George Harrison (lead guitar and vocals). Previous members of the band on its beginnings were Stuart Sutcliffe (bass guitar) and Pete Best (drums). Also talented artist and painter, Sutcliffe died on 1962 at age 21 due to a cerebral aneurysm. He is credited together with John Lennon with the band's name change for The Beatles. It was also his fiancée, German photographer Astrid Kirchherr, the one who suggested the hair style that became one of the band's trademarks. Pete Best was replaced at the drums in 1962 by Ringo Starr who became the fourth Beatle and remained with the band through all the "Beatlemania" era until the end of its legendary -yet "winding"- ten years long career (1960-1970). Take a tour on the bands origins and main accomplishments by reading the play "Get Back".

NOTE
Status of Probation or Suspension from mass performance means that a student's choir membership is being reviewed or restricted due to one or more of the following:
- attendance problems (student has reached 4 absences and /or tardiness to choir practices and events during a trimester)
- behavioral problems (i.e., lack of interest, poor attention and participation, talkative, off task, eating food, chewing gum, drinking beverages without permission)
- performance problems (i.e., poor singing skills development, not resolved intonation or voice projection difficulties, lack of ability to learn new songs at due pace)
As much as we regret it, failure to respond in a positive way after any of the previous conditions had been individually addressed may and will cause permanent
withdrawal from the choir, no exceptions.
