Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! I am thrilled to have your child in my class room this year! Mrs. Iduate and I look forward to a year of academic and social achievements. It is a blessing for both of us to be educators in The Padre Pio Program here at St. Agatha.

 I realize that these first few days can be mind-boggling for everyone. If there is anything we can do to facilitate something for you, please ask. The reason for my communication is to convey some important information regarding procedures and policies.

Communication

Our e-mail system has been working well for us. I find this method of communication the most efficient. Please e-mail me a ppb@stagathaonline.org. A good old –fashioned note will also get my attention!

Your child’s Home –School Connection Folder needs to be checked on a daily basis. All pertinent notices as well as some of their homework will be in this particular folder. Most of their graded tests will be sent home in this folder. You should review them with your child and send it back signed the following school day.  Their agendas will be filled in every morning and signed by either myself or Mrs. Iduate. A parent must review the agenda, verify the assignments have been completed, sign it, and assure that it is returned to school the following day.

Please encourage your child to strive for good attendance this year. In the event it is necessary for your child to be absent from school, please send a note explaining the absence on the day your child returns to school. Students with an excused absence will be given one day for each day of absence to make up the work they missed.

Homework

Homework will be assigned Monday – Thursday. You should expect the homework to take your child between thirty minutes to one hour to complete. This excludes studying for tests. The assignments will be at their independent or instructional level. Homework is intended to reinforce previously taught material. Your child may need assistance, but you should not be teaching him /her something they haven’t already covered in class. Keep in mind this is a multi –level classroom. Your child’s assignments may differ from his /her classmates. After three missed assignments, the student will be required to serve a detention after school. Students will be tested often on material they are learning. It is our goal to prepare our students for the realities of a mainstream class room

  Keep in mind that your child will receive letter grades in my classroom. I will adhere to the grading scale used by the rest of the school. Please refer to the student handbook if you are not familiar with the scale.

Being prepared for learning needs to be a priority. It is imperative that all necessary school supplies be available to your child on a daily basis. Please encourage them to use erasable pens for all assignments except math. Liquid paper and non-erasable pens are discouraged.

We also require that all textbooks be covered. Moreover, students are not allowed to write in any book that is not a consumable one.

Discipline

We are aware that some of our students have difficulty behaving appropriately at times. It is our goal to modify and extinguish behaviors that disturb the learning process. We employ behavior modification techniques to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed in our program. Your child will be expected to adhere to the rules that are specified in the student handbook as well as our class rules. We will be sending a copy of our class rules home for your review.

A Behavior Log will be sent home on a daily basis summarizing your child’s behavior daily. The rating system will be as follows:

G= Good

S= Satisfactory

I= Needs Improvement

U= Unsatisfactory

The log will be initialed by Mrs. Iduate or me, and it must be reviewed and initialed by a parent on a daily basis. If your child has maintained behavior ratings of G or S throughout the week, certain privileges will be afforded to him /her. There will also be consequences for children who consistently misbehave. We will discuss the behavior plan in further detail during Back – to –School Night.

Conferences

We will meet every trimester to discuss your child’s progress. If the need arises, we can meet on other occasions. Conferences can be scheduled before or after school.

I am confident that together we can make this an excellent year for your child!

In His service,

Cristina M. Perez M.S.                               Mrs. Ana Iduate

Service Hours Activities

 Please log on to the following web-sites for more information.

Click for Virtus at www.virtus.org

Click for Fingerprinting at www.adom.sofn.net

You must bring the necessary documentation to the school office and be approved by the administration before volunteering.  Thank you for all that you do.

Parents/guardians dropping students at the events MUST personally inquire about the logistics of the project with supervisor/chaperone in charge.  No participant will be dismissed from the project until the contact form has been signed by the parent/guardian picking up the student. Supervisors/chaperones are encouraged to randomly take roll call to assess full participation and attendance. It is of dire importance to stress that the students MUST be supervised at all times by an adult. Students are asked at all times to stay within the assigned group and keep at safe and modest distance from the chaperone.

Your cooperation to this matter is immensely appreciated.  The safety of our students is our #1 priority.

 Please turn in the following form whenever your child is completing a service project!
